World History 1900 – 1920

At the turn of the century two major conflicts were in progress within the British Empire and China. One was the Boxer Rebellion in China, the other was the second Boer War in South Africa. In December 1900 after 14 months of campaigning the War Office published a report stating that 11,000 British troops have died. 7000 of these died because of dysentry, enteric fever and other diseases.

In 1904 a monument was erected at Coombe Hill (Wendover) to recognise the names of 150 soldiers from Buckinghamshire who died in the second Boer war.

President McKinley assassinated

Sept 14 1901. President McKinley dies of wounds inflicted by Polish anarchist Leon Czolgosz on Sept 6th in Buffalo, New York. President Roosevelt becomes the new President of the United States.

Panama Canal

Nov 18 1901. Britain and the United States agree terms for the building a new canal across central America.

Trans Atlantic Wireless Message

Dec 11 1901. Guglielmo Marconi planned and carried out an experiment from Poldhu, Cornwall to St. Johns Newfoundland sending three dots (morse for the letter S) by wireless communication. The Post Master General and the Navy are taking a keen interest.

UK History 1900 – 1920

Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria dies on the 22nd of January 1901 and is succeeded by her son King Edward VII.  She was born on the 24th of May 1819, and was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20th June 1837.

Labour Party Formed

Feb 27, 1900. The labour representation committee was formed (later to become the Labour Party). It was formed from 65 trade unions and three socialist societies and led by Ramsey MacDonald. At the time of formation it represented 568,000 workers.

Population of England and Wales

Following a census carried out in 1900 the results report that 32.5 million people live in England and Wales, 3.5 million more than the last census 10 years ago.

Stevens Family

The Stevens Family of Butchers
